Themed Retail Environment and Masculinity
Researchers are becoming more interested in consumer traits and habits of male consumers. A study was done at the ESPN Zone in Chicago on how themed retail environment motivates and excites consumers.
I would like my space to be gender neutral. To accomplish this I wanted to make the surfaces hard and cold, use a color that males or females like, and add some curves to soften the space. I think by having a nice balance of a male and female themed salon will attract both genders.
Technology May Enhance User Participation in Design
This article is about using technology (3D modeling programs and virtual reality programs) to involve occupants in workspace planning.
By using a website or blogging to communicate with my client I can convey my ideas and learn more about what they want and need so I can design a functional space for them.
Representing the Human Form in Drawings
This article is about using a variety of human forms in your architectural drawings instead of using a uniform human form.
I will be sure to include a variety of human forms in my drawings. It will eliminate issues that might arise with race and gender. It will also support my concept… a salon for all types of people!

EMOTIONAL RESPONSES TO COLOR IN TURKEY
Design of the built environment is intrinsically linked to color because people experience their surroundings through perception, cognition, and meaning associated with color.
Individuals’ response to color may depend on age, gender, cultural background, and linguistic considerations
Pink: romanticism, enjoyment, warmness
Orange: vivid, striking
White: purity, hygiene
Even though this article is focused on residential, it still applies to public the public. Color influences the way people feel about their surrounding. I think using the colors orange, pink, and white will create a balanced environment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF CEILING HEIGHT IN RETAIL SPACES
Ceiling height may influence the way consumers process information: Higher ceilings= freedom that leads to abstract processing (think of products in non-traditional, more creative ways to fully understand the product)While Lower ceilings= confinement that leads to concrete, item-specific processing ( think in item-specific, detailed ways, to fully understand the product.)
I think by using high ceilings in my salon will make the customers feel more comfortable about their new hair style.

STORE ATMOSPHERE INFLUENCES CUSTOMERS
It is important to understand the influence of store atmosphere on customers' perceptions of store image, because relying solely on sales incentives may not be enough to attract customers. Using décor and the interior design of a store to communicate and reinforce the nature and image of the store.
The atmosphere of a store is a big factor when it comes to keeping customers interested, not just in your product but coming to your store. A salon isn't primarily about it's product, it is about the customer experience & atmosphere that is created while getting their hair done.

Sink & New Tile
Mosaic Wall Tile for Bathroom & Backsplash behind the Shampoo chairs. I originally wanted to use color tile but... I think keeping everything neutral and using color in the paint will look better.
I found this beautiful sink on the Kohler website! I am going to only use this sink it the public bathroom.

FINISHES and ideas
My GOAL is to use sustainable materials.
Brick Walls
Concrete flooring w/ embossed? or painted? flowers
This looks like cork but it's really wood. Possible option for color bar.
Ice Stone- Alpine White on all surfaces (bathroom & color bar)
Stardust Recycled Glass Tile- 4" circle tiles used in the restrooms.
Reclaimed wood or bamboo from Second Use for reception desk, similar to this.
I love these stylist chairs! It's perfect... white or black is the question?
The black looks good... but I think I am leaning towards the white because they are more feminine. Orange would be another possibility. I also think the free standing mirrors are amazing, I like this setup.
Last but not least, I want realistic cherry blossoms painted on the walls, not sure how but this is an idea. I would like to visually convey the meaning of the cherry blossom by showing it in all of it's stages of life.

What my classmates are doing!
Jessie's is doing a 4 story home located in the Puget Sound area- Edmonds for Bob and Luisa McEachern. They are both creative people, Bob enjoys painting and cooking and Luisa enjoys cooking and flower arrangements. They have two grown children that will visit, so there needs to be a guest room. They also entertain a lot and want lots of seating in kitchen, a breakfast bar & nook, game room, theater room, and built-in kitchen outside with fireplace. Their home will be their retirement home, so universal design is important for her clients. They want their home to feel light and airy, not too feminine, no plaid, and to bring their sounding inside.
Sophorn is also doing a home for a couple. Her client has an interest in decorating and knows exactly what she wants. Their home is a typical Californian home with a pool and open floor plan. Her clients are easy going who like to entertain. They want their home to be comfortable and feel like a home to everyone who enters!
Emily's client is a bachelor who what's a bachelors pad. It's located in a condominium in Florida. I couldn't access her blog so I will update this later!

Universal Design in my Salon
Universal Design should be applied to all buildings! I want to incorporate Universal Design into my salon. I think it is important, I have always assumed individuals who have a disability for most of their life were the only people who benefited from Universal Design. I did not consider those who are aging and and who may temporarily be in a wheel chair (everyone at some point in their life) would benefit from Universal Design. Here is a list of Universal Design elements I want to incorporate into my Salon:
- ADA bathrooms
- ADA front desk... you never know when one of your employees will temporarily be in a wheel chair, as well as a client
- 42" or 48" wide hallways
- smooth flooring and transitions
- 36" wide doorways
- Zero step to entry
- 18" or 24" high electrical outlets
- lever style door and faucet handles
- Rocker style light switch
- ADA compliant cabinetry, kitchen, and bathroom fixtures
- Space for a wheel chair at a stylist station
- multiple counter heights
- 5' turn around in bathroom, halls, laundry rooms
- side by side washer and dryer, front load
