Themed Retail Environment and Masculinity

Researchers are becoming more interested in consumer traits and habits of male consumers. A study was done at the ESPN Zone in Chicago on how themed retail environment motivates and excites consumers.

I would like my space to be gender neutral. To accomplish this I wanted to make the surfaces hard and cold, use a color that males or females like, and add some curves to soften the space. I think by having a nice balance of a male and female themed salon will attract both genders.

Technology May Enhance User Participation in Design

This article is about using technology (3D modeling programs and virtual reality programs) to involve occupants in workspace planning.

By using a website or blogging to communicate with my client I can convey my ideas and learn more about what they want and need so I can design a functional space for them.

Representing the Human Form in Drawings

This article is about using a variety of human forms in your architectural drawings instead of using a uniform human form.

I will be sure to include a variety of human forms in my drawings. It will eliminate issues that might arise with race and gender. It will also support my concept… a salon for all types of people!

EMOTIONAL RESPONSES TO COLOR IN TURKEY
Design of the built environment is intrinsically linked to color because people experience their surroundings through perception, cognition, and meaning associated with color.
Individuals’ response to color may depend on age, gender, cultural background, and linguistic considerations
Pink: romanticism, enjoyment, warmness
Orange: vivid, striking

White: purity, hygiene
Even though this article is focused on residential, it still applies to public the public. Color influences the way people feel about their surrounding. I think using the colors orange, pink, and white will create a balanced environment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF CEILING HEIGHT IN RETAIL SPACES
Ceiling height may influence the way consumers process information: Higher ceilings= freedom that leads to abstract processing (think of products in non-traditional, more creative ways to fully understand the product)While Lower ceilings= confinement that leads to concrete, item-specific processing ( think in item-specific, detailed ways, to fully understand the product.)
I think by using high ceilings in my salon will make the customers feel more comfortable about their new hair style.

STORE ATMOSPHERE INFLUENCES CUSTOMERS
It is important to understand the influence of store atmosphere on customers' perceptions of store image, because relying solely on sales incentives may not be enough to attract customers. Using décor and the interior design of a store to communicate and reinforce the nature and image of the store.
The atmosphere of a store is a big factor when it comes to keeping customers interested, not just in your product but coming to your store. A salon isn't primarily about it's product, it is about the customer experience & atmosphere that is created while getting their hair done.

Sink & New Tile

Bathroom Flooring

Glass- iridescent

Glass- Ivory

Glass - White

Mosaic Wall Tile for Bathroom & Backsplash behind the Shampoo chairs. I originally wanted to use color tile but... I think keeping everything neutral and using color in the paint will look better.

I found this beautiful sink on the Kohler website! I am going to only use this sink it the public bathroom.

FINISHES and ideas

My GOAL is to use sustainable materials.
Brick Walls

Concrete flooring w/ embossed? or painted? flowers

This looks like cork but it's really wood. Possible option for color bar.

Ice Stone- Alpine White on all surfaces (bathroom & color bar)

Stardust Recycled Glass Tile- 4" circle tiles used in the restrooms.

Tile colors:

Reclaimed wood or bamboo from Second Use for reception desk, similar to this.

I love these stylist chairs! It's perfect... white or black is the question?

The black looks good... but I think I am leaning towards the white because they are more feminine. Orange would be another possibility. I also think the free standing mirrors are amazing, I like this setup.

Last but not least, I want realistic cherry blossoms painted on the walls, not sure how but this is an idea. I would like to visually convey the meaning of the cherry blossom by showing it in all of it's stages of life.

What my classmates are doing!

Jessie's is doing a 4 story home located in the Puget Sound area- Edmonds for Bob and Luisa McEachern. They are both creative people, Bob enjoys painting and cooking and Luisa enjoys cooking and flower arrangements. They have two grown children that will visit, so there needs to be a guest room. They also entertain a lot and want lots of seating in kitchen, a breakfast bar & nook, game room, theater room, and built-in kitchen outside with fireplace. Their home will be their retirement home, so universal design is important for her clients. They want their home to feel light and airy, not too feminine, no plaid, and to bring their sounding inside.

Sophorn is also doing a home for a couple. Her client has an interest in decorating and knows exactly what she wants. Their home is a typical Californian home with a pool and open floor plan. Her clients are easy going who like to entertain. They want their home to be comfortable and feel like a home to everyone who enters!

Emily's client is a bachelor who what's a bachelors pad. It's located in a condominium in Florida. I couldn't access her blog so I will update this later!

Universal Design in my Salon

Universal Design should be applied to all buildings! I want to incorporate Universal Design into my salon. I think it is important, I have always assumed individuals who have a disability for most of their life were the only people who benefited from Universal Design. I did not consider those who are aging and and who may temporarily be in a wheel chair (everyone at some point in their life) would benefit from Universal Design. Here is a list of Universal Design elements I want to incorporate into my Salon:

  • ADA bathrooms
  • ADA front desk... you never know when one of your employees will temporarily be in a wheel chair, as well as a client
  • 42" or 48" wide hallways
  • smooth flooring and transitions
  • 36" wide doorways
  • Zero step to entry
  • 18" or 24" high electrical outlets
  • lever style door and faucet handles
  • Rocker style light switch
  • ADA compliant cabinetry, kitchen, and bathroom fixtures
  • Space for a wheel chair at a stylist station
  • multiple counter heights
  • 5' turn around in bathroom, halls, laundry rooms
  • side by side washer and dryer, front load

Universal Design Research

The Institute for Human Centered Design (IHCD), is an international non-governmental educational organization (NGO) committed to advancing the role of design in expanding opportunity and enhancing experience for people of all ages and abilities through excellence in design.
IHCD promotes design that works for everyone across the spectrum of ability and age and enhances human experience. They provide easy access to information and guidance about civil rights laws and codes, promotion and education and consultation about strategies!
The Center for Universal Design (CUD) is a national information, technical assistance, and research center that evaluates, develops, and promotes accessible and universal design in housing, commercial and public facilities, outdoor environments, and products.  Their mission is to improve environments and products through design innovation, research, education and design assistance.
Healing Homes designs solutions that would allow people with disabilities the same degree of freedom and control that their “enabled” counterparts take for granted every day, in every setting. There is currently a group of designers within the architectural and interior design professions in the United States and elsewhere who specialize in designing primary care facilities and who share the perspective that the built environment can also be a “healing” environment; that is, that the place where we reside has a direct impact on our sense of well being, our sense of security and our sense of control over our immediate living space and that it can have enormous therapeutic value for all of us. A given environmental setting can and does either discourage or promote-trigger-the healing response within us, it is either stressful or relaxing.
  • Bay windows and sky lights to maximize the amount of natural light entering the bedroom,
  • Custom lighting design that features bright but indirect light in each room,
  • The use of multiple colors in the suite that are cool and calming, but visually appealing.
  • Continuous fresh air for a healthful supply of oxygen
  • The use of natural wood finishes
  • Harmonizing acoustics
  • The use of water features that lower stress
  • Incorporation of “smart” house and teleconferencing to enhance control and contact
  • Bathroom and bedroom are large enough for a wheelchair to turn 360 degrees
  • A universally accessible roll-in shower
  • Adjustable, hand-held shower head
  • Sliding bathroom doors
  • Grab bars
  • Wheel-in closet
  • Surfaces with uniform, smooth edges throughout the suite
  • Single lever controls for all faucets
  • Anti-scald valves in tub/shower
  • Indirect lighting throughout the suite
  • Bay window for maximum amount of natural light entering the suite
  • Aesthetics of the suite’s exterior blend with the main residence

Inspiration & Ideas

Hair dryer's suspended from ceiling!

Kate envisioned her Salon similar to Urban Outfitters... Concrete flooring, brick walls, murals, industrial location, and an eclectic feel!

Color bar (where stylists mix color) in middle of salon so it is easily accessible for all of the stylists. As well as a focal point, up to ceiling.

cherry blossom INSPIRATION

The Cherry blossom has many meanings: In the Japanese culture, the cherry blossom represents the cycle of life and how our lives blossom and fall. In China the cherry blossoms has a completely different meaning than Japanese culture, it is associated with women’s dominance and beauty as well as feminine sexuality. The Japanese culture’s meaning of the cherry blossom (the cherry blossom represents the cycle of life and how our lives blossom and fall) relates to our forever changing hair styles, color, and length. It grows and then we cut it. Nothing in life is permanent and change is the only constant.
One of the focal points will be a painted mural of the cycle of a cherry blossom.

CONCRETE

I want to incorporate concrete flooring into my salon because it is durable, sustainable, and can look amazing! In addition to the three sites I have posted, I have also found a useful source for concrete flooring. This website is loaded with information about concrete flooring.
I was concerned about the concrete stain because of the hazardous chemicals that are used in it... I stubbled across a website that  ConcretNetwork.com provideed called Eco Safety Products: http://www.ecosafetyproducts.com
Their product SoyCretetm Concrete Stain is a non-toxic bio-based chemistry engineered with an advanced soy ester dispersion technology. SoyCretetm is the #1 selling bio-based, semi-transparent, non toxic decorative concrete stain. It is the preferred choice among professional green builders and concrete artisans worldwide. SoyCretetm meets more sustainability attributes than any other concrete stain product by containing renewable resource materials, recycled content and ultra low VOC's. SoyCretetm is ideal for interior and exterior porous surfaces such as: concrete, masonry, brick, stucco, fiber cement, rammed earth and natural stone surfaces.
Here are some examples of SoyCrete concrete stain:

3 informative sites that discuss sustainability

1. http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CategoryID=19

LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project meets the highest green building and performance measures. It is a good strategy to  consider sustainable design early in the design process. There are many benefits to earning LEED certification:
Lower operating costs and increase asset value.
Reduce waste sent to landfills.
Conserve energy and water.
Be healthier and safer for occupants.
Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of cities.
Demonstrate an owner's commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Eco Business links is a great website to find GREEN Resources. I have used this website to find local & sustainable manufacturers for previous sustainable projects. Eco Business links also provides links to baby & child products, organic flowers and gifts, organic food, books, arts, crafts, and design, used products, retail, and body care as well!

Ecohaus is another website that I have used to find sustainable products. They provide links to sustainable building materials, flooring, kitchen & bath, paints & finishes, new products, ways to be efficient, lifestyle, and outdoor. It is a informative website as well as a showroom you can visit.
Ecohaus believes that everyone cares about the health of the planet. Not just movie stars, activists and dreamers, but every one of us. We all want to live in a world with clean air, abundant forests, thriving communities and a future full of promise. At the same time, they realize that anyone who builds or remodels has one priority above all: to create a beautiful, healthy home where everything works.Ecohaus connects these two ideals simply by offering the best building products made locally and around the world.
